Learn the Lesson
I think my wife is the only person in the civilized world who doesn’t drive. As I look back over the years, I still don’t understand it but in the long run, I think that perhaps the world is safer and better off.
It’s not that I didn’t try to teach her. Friends and even a professional Driving Ed teacher tried. She was a good sport and tried to learn, but she had an inherent fear of being on the road alone with all the chaos of traffic around her.
But in a serious moment, we discussed that, in the real world, she should at least know HOW to drive. Occasionally we are could be faced with unanticipated circumstances that demand immediate attention. We discussed how we are not responsible for the waves at the seashore, but we should learn how to meet them, remain in control and avoid being swamped by them.
Even though she may never drive in her life, we would all be better of if she knew how to meet an emergency situation by knowing HOW to drive. She did learn the rudiments of driving but, gratefully, we never had such an emergency that demanded that she take over. But at least she COULD have if the situation demanded it.
At one time or another, we can have an unanticipated, unavoidable crisis that demands resolution. The ordinary problem solving methods we are so used to often aren’t good enough and don’t yield the desired results.
It is at times like these that we need something more reliable to fall back on. We should at least know the principles embodied in the problem resolution procedures embodied in universal natural laws and principles (”the creative and controlling forces of the universe”, Webster). These laws and principles are always operating and available whether we consciously use them or not.
I had a trying experience years ago that validated this fact. I had worked on a situation that would not yield to my best efforts. I was completely exhausted physically and emotionally. At this point, when nothing worked, I realized that “I” had been trying to force a solution. It was like trying to push a rope!
I realized I needed another approach. It was early in my discovery of the scientific approach of my present message, so I decided to put it to the test. I knew the principles involved, looked away from the situation and lifted my thought to embrace the “controlling forces of the universe”.
The next day I found myself effortlessly “working” on the same project, which was completely resolved in ways I would not have dared to anticipate.
So even if you feel you are not yet ready to make a total commitment to this scientific approach, I cannot urge you strongly enough to at least learn its principles so that when you have exhausted the “old” ways that don’t work, you will know there is an alternative. What better way to learn!
